Managing Director Job Description

General Description

The Managing Director of Cecil and Grace Bean’s Soup Kitchen is responsible for the overall management and daily operations of a faith-based, non-profit soup kitchen serving food-insecure individuals and families in the Norristown community. This leadership role ensures that the kitchen operates with compassion, efficiency, and excellence while upholding the mission and values of the organization. The Managing Director is responsible for supervising staff and volunteers, managing the budget, maintaining health and safety compliance, coordinating with local partners and vendors, and fostering a welcoming, dignified environment for all guests.

Essential Job Functions

Program Oversight and Operations

  • Oversee the daily operations of the soup kitchen, ensuring meal service is safe, timely, and consistent with organizational standards.
  • Develop and maintain operational policies, procedures, and schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal health and safety regulations.
  • Maintain inventory, ordering, and distribution systems for food and supplies.
  • Ensure the physical environment of the facility is clean, safe, and welcoming.

Staff and Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate staff and volunteers.
  • Foster a positive, mission-aligned workplace culture based on mutual respect and teamwork.
  • Create and implement training programs and standard operating procedures.

Community Engagement and Partnerships

  • Serve as the primary liaison with local organizations, churches, food banks, vendors, and donors.
  • Represent the soup kitchen at public events and in the community.
  • Work with local service providers to connect guests with supportive resources and referrals.

Finance and Administration

  • Manage the organization’s budget in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure proper financial tracking, reporting, and compliance with non-profit standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of service outputs, donor contributions, and expenses.
  • Support fundraising activities including grant writing, donor communication, and special events.

Board Relations and Strategic Leadership

  • Report regularly to the Board of Directors on operational, financial, and programmatic progress.
  • Assist the Board in strategic planning, policy development, and long-term sustainability.
  • Implement board-approved goals and initiatives aligned with the mission and vision.

Experience and Education

Required:

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of leadership or program management experience in a non-profit, ministry, or community service setting.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage people, projects, and budgets effectively.
  • Compassion for vulnerable populations and a commitment to dignity, justice, and service.
  • Experience working with diverse groups, including volunteers, guests, and community partners.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Social Work, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Experience in food service operations or facilities management.
  • Familiarity with faith-based service models and the Norristown community.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
